Oklahoma stereotypes: One step forward, two steps back

The NBA, Mayor Mick on Ellen, OKC listed by National Geographic as one of the best cities to live in for people who love the outdoors:  Just when you think things are turning around for the outsider’s perception of Oklahoma, this happens.  I would include an image, but that would spoil the surprise.  (Credit to Shay a.k.a. “The Boss” for the link.)

Safari 4 Public Beta (Updated)

Apple has released a public beta of version four it’s Web browser, Safari. I haven’t had much time to play with it, but it’s UI enhancements look very slick and are eerily similar to Google’s Chrome browser. It will be interesting to see what the reaction will be.

UPDATE: C|Net has posted some initial benchmarks. Safari 4 is apparently really fast.

Obama bigger than Jesus, survey shows

A recent Harris Poll (via Catholic News Agency) shows that President Obama’s status as a hero has eclipsed that of Jesus in the eyes of Americans.

Respondents most often named Barack Obama, followed by Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King, Jr., Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.

Mother Teresa was the tenth most often named, while God was the eleventh most. (from CNA)

Honestly, this doesn’t surprise me at all.  The love affair with between the press and Obama is enough to make even moderates like myself queezy, and people think and do what the TV tells them to do.  What does surprise me is that George W. Bush appears on the list ahead of Mother Teresa and God.  If everyone in the world hates ol’  G.W. like we are led to believe, what does that say about our opinion of God?

Internet Explorer 6 on OS X made easy

ie4osx

In the days of Internet browser compatibility, the days have become rare when you arrive at a site that snubs you for your browser choice. Well, unless you use a Mac and your company uses UltiPro for payroll and administrative info. All I wanted to do was see my pay stub for today, but the site is IE-for-Windows-only.

Enter ies4osx, which allows you to run IE6 on OS X with very little effort. It uses Darwine (the Mac port of Wine) and X11 to run Microsoft’s grumpy old browser. Making sure to use Mike Kronenberg’s version of Darwine 1.1.9, the installation went really smoothly. (NOTE: I already had X11 installed. It is not installed by default.) About ten minutes later, I was browsing my precious HR info.

PepsiCo. throws back…to sugar

BevReview is reporting (via kottke.org via Daring Fireball) that Pepsi will introduce novelty “throwback” versions of both Pepsi and Mountain Dew that contain actual, real-life sugar and not high fructose corn syrup.  While most people will file this under “who cares,” I find it interesting.  In many other countries, soft drinks still use sugar for sweetening.  To echo Gruber from Daring Fireball, I just wish it was Coca-Cola doing this.  I had “real” Coke made with sugar while in Europe, and it is just better.
